Terms of Service
The plain-English version, then the fine print
Last updated: July 29, 2026
Legal Time Online helps you turn the work you already did into clean, defensible draft time entries. Confidentiality is the whole point: legal documents are among the most sensitive there are, so we built the product to hold as little of your material as possible — your documents are read on your device, nothing is stored, and generation runs on an AI provider that does not train on your content by default. The short FAQ below covers what most attorneys want to know; our privacy commitment and the full terms follow. By using the service, you agree to them.
Our privacy commitment
Confidentiality is paramount in legal work, so we built for it. Your documents are read on your device, in your browser — the files themselves normally never leave your computer; to draft entries we send only the text extracted from them. We don’t store your documents or the entries we draft — everything is processed in memory for a single request and then discarded, and our logs never record their contents. And there are no accounts, so nothing identifies you. For generation we use Claude, from Anthropic — under API terms where Anthropic does not use your content to train its models by default.
More in Privacy & confidentiality.
▸Quick FAQ
- What is Legal Time Online?
- It’s a drafting assistant. You give it the documents you worked on plus a little context, and it writes draft billing entries you can edit, copy, and paste into your own billing system. It is a tool — not a law firm, not your lawyer, not legal advice, and not your system of record. It does not decide how much to bill or whether an entry is appropriate; you do.
- Do you store my documents?
- No. When you add a document, it is read in your browser, on your device — the file itself normally never even reaches our servers. Only the extracted text is sent, in memory, for that single request and then discarded — we don’t save your documents or the generated entries, and there is no database holding your work. Your working session is kept only in your browser’s memory for your current visit; it isn’t saved to disk and is cleared when you refresh, leave, or come back. Our operational logs record metadata (things like file size, page and character counts, and token counts) — never the contents of your documents or your entries. More in Privacy & confidentiality.
- What actually gets sent to the AI?
- Your browser extracts the text from the documents you add, and we send that text — along with each file name and the work description and any times you type — to our AI provider, Anthropic (the maker of Claude), to draft your entries. The original files normally never leave your device; if your browser can’t read a particular file, small files fall back to a one-time, in-memory parse on our server and are immediately discarded. We don’t store any of it, and there are no accounts, so nothing identifies you. How Anthropic handles what it receives is covered in Privacy & confidentiality below.
- Will my work be used to train an AI?
- We don’t train any models on your work. Generation runs on Anthropic’s Claude API, and Anthropic states that it does not use API inputs or outputs to train its models unless a customer opts in — we haven’t. That is Anthropic’s commitment under its own policies, covered in the privacy section below and in Anthropic’s commercial terms and privacy policy.
- Could uploading a document waive privilege or breach confidentiality?
- We built the app to minimize exposure — your files are read on your device, we store nothing, and only extracted text reaches the AI provider. Still, sending material to any outside service can implicate client confidentiality and the attorney–client privilege, so you remain responsible for your professional and ethical duties and for obtaining any client consent your rules require. The Full Terms below set out the details.
- Can I just submit the entries it generates?
- No. Everything the app produces is a draft. You are responsible for reviewing and verifying every entry — both the time (hours/duration) and the substance (what the narrative says) — and for making sure each entry is accurate, complete, and appropriate before you bill it. The app can be wrong; you are the lawyer of record.
- Is this legal advice? Are you my lawyer?
- No, and no. Using Legal Time Online does not create an attorney–client relationship with us, and nothing the app produces is legal advice.
▸Privacy & confidentiality
Confidentiality shaped how this product is built. Here is exactly what we do with your material, how generation stays private, and the honest limits you should weigh.
What we do (our commitment)
- Your documents are read on your device. Extraction runs in your browser, so the original files normally never leave your computer. The only exception: if your browser can’t read a particular file, small files are parsed once on our server, in memory, and immediately discarded.
- What we send for generation. Only the extracted text, each document’s file name, and the work description and times you type. We never send your identity, because there are no accounts.
- No storage of your content. Documents and generated entries are never saved on our servers — uploads are processed in memory only for the duration of the request and then discarded. There is no database of your work.
- No content in our logs. Our logs record operational metadata only (file size, page/character counts, token usage) — never the contents of your documents or entries.
- Your session stays in your browser. It’s held only in your browser’s memory for your current visit, isn’t written to disk, and is cleared when you refresh, leave, or return.
- Minimal technical data. We process limited technical data, such as IP address, to operate the Service, prevent abuse, and apply rate limits — this is handled by our infrastructure providers and is not sent to the AI provider.
Why we chose Anthropic’s Claude
The quality of a billing entry is a professional matter — it has to accurately describe the work, in the right level of detail, or it isn’t defensible. We chose Claude (Anthropic) because it produces the most accurate, specific entries of the models we have evaluated. On privacy, Anthropic’s API terms provide that customer content is not used to train Anthropic’s models unless the customer opts in (we haven’t), and Anthropic publishes its data-handling, retention, and security practices; see Anthropic’s commercial terms, privacy policy, and trust portal. Those are Anthropic’s commitments, not ours — we describe why we chose them, but we don’t make them on Anthropic’s behalf.
The honest limits (please read)
By using the Service, you understand and agree that your content is processed by Anthropic. We make no representations or warranties about Anthropic or its services, and we take no responsibility for how Anthropic processes, retains, or secures your content. Anthropic may retain API data for limited periods under its own policies, and sending material to any third-party or AI service can implicate client confidentiality and the attorney–client privilege and work product. You are responsible for reviewing Anthropic’s current terms and privacy policy, obtaining any client consent your professional rules require, and confirming the Service meets your obligations before uploading anything. You decide what to upload and assume the risks of doing so.
▸Full Terms
These Terms of Service (the “Terms”) govern your access to and use of Legal Time Online and the website at legaltime.online (the “Service,” provided by “Legal Time Online,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). By accessing or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
1.What the Service is — and is not
The Service is a software tool that uses AI to generate draft attorney time entries from documents and context you supply. It is intended to help you reconstruct and phrase entries for work you actually performed. It is not a law firm, a lawyer, legal advice, a billing or accounting system of record, a timekeeping/compliance authority, or a guarantee of any outcome. It does not determine the correct amount of time for any task, whether any entry complies with a court rule, billing guideline, or engagement agreement, or whether any work is billable. You acknowledge that you understand what the Service does and does not do, and you assume the risks of using it.
2.No legal advice; no attorney–client relationship
The Service and its output do not constitute legal advice and are not a substitute for your professional judgment. No attorney–client relationship is formed between you and Legal Time Online by your use of the Service.
3.Your responsibilities
You are solely responsible for the accuracy, completeness, and propriety of every time entry you bill — including both the time recorded and the description of the work — and for reviewing and editing all output before relying on or submitting it. You are responsible for complying with all applicable rules of professional conduct, court and billing-guideline rules, fee agreements, and laws, and for exercising independent professional judgment. You represent that you are authorized to upload and process the materials you submit.
4.Confidentiality & privilege
You are responsible for protecting client confidences and the attorney–client privilege and work product, and for obtaining any client consent your professional obligations require before submitting materials to the Service or to our AI provider. We have designed the Service to reduce exposure (see Section 5 and “Privacy & confidentiality” above), but you acknowledge that transmitting materials to any third-party or AI service may carry confidentiality and privilege risk, and that confidential computing reduces but does not eliminate that risk. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all responsibility and liability for any claimed waiver of privilege, loss of work-product protection, or breach of confidentiality arising from your use of the Service.
5.How it works and how your data is handled
Documents you add are read on your device, in your browser, which extracts their text; the original files are normally never transmitted to us. (If your browser cannot read a particular file, small files are parsed once on our server, in memory, and immediately discarded.) To generate entries, the extracted text, each document’s file name, and the work description and times you enter are transmitted to our AI provider, Anthropic, whose Claude model returns the generated draft entries. We do not store your documents or generated entries on our servers: everything is processed in memory only for the duration of the request and then discarded, and we maintain no database of your content. Your working session is held only in your browser’s memory for the duration of your visit; it is not saved to disk and is cleared when you refresh, leave, or return. Our server logs record operational metadata only (such as file size, page/character counts, and token usage) and do not record the contents of your documents or entries. We process limited technical data, such as IP address, to operate the Service, prevent abuse, and apply rate limits. We rely on third-party infrastructure providers, currently including Anthropic (AI inference), Vercel (hosting), and Upstash (rate-limiting), which process data on our behalf to provide the Service. See “Privacy & confidentiality” above for the detail and the limits.
6.Third-party AI provider (Anthropic)
The Service uses Anthropic’s Claude API. By using the Service, you acknowledge and agree that the content you submit is transmitted to and processed by Anthropic. We make no representations or warranties regarding Anthropic, its technology, security, or policies, do not guarantee any confidentiality or privacy outcome, and take no responsibility for how Anthropic processes, retains, or secures your content. Anthropic’s processing is governed by Anthropic’s own commercial terms and privacy policy, which are controlled by Anthropic and may change at any time. You are responsible for reviewing them and confirming they are acceptable for your intended use before uploading any materials.
7.Future data use & privacy
Privacy is central to how we build this product. We do not sell your personal information or your content. In the future, we may collect aggregated or de-identified usage information — for example, to understand how long certain types of matters take or to improve the Service — and we will design any such collection with privacy in mind. If our data practices change in a material way, we will update these Terms and revise the “Last updated” date above; your continued use after an update constitutes acceptance.
8.Acceptable use
You agree to use the Service only for lawful purposes and only with materials you are authorized to submit. You agree not to misuse the Service, including by attempting to breach security, scrape or reverse-engineer it, overload or disrupt it, circumvent usage limits, or use it to build a competing product.
9.No warranties
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service or its output will be accurate, complete, reliable, uninterrupted, error-free, or secure, and we do not guarantee the confidentiality guarantees of any third-party provider.
10.Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Legal Time Online and its operators will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for any lost profits, lost or written-down fees, lost data, or professional, disciplinary, or reputational harm, arising out of or relating to your use of (or inability to use) the Service, even if advised of the possibility. To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total aggregate liability for all claims relating to the Service will not exceed the greater of the amounts you paid us for the Service in the twelve months before the claim or fifty U.S. dollars (US $50). Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so some of these may not apply to you.
11.Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Legal Time Online and its operators from and against any claims, damages, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising out of or related to your use of the Service, your materials, the entries you bill, or your violation of these Terms or of any law or professional obligation.
12.Changes to the Service and these Terms
We may modify or discontinue the Service, and we may update these Terms, at any time. When we update the Terms, we will revise the “Last updated” date. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
13.Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. You agree that any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in Delaware, and you consent to personal jurisdiction there.
